In a swim meet, what is the difference between an "event" and a "heat"?

An "event" is a particular gender within an age group swimming a particular stroke a certain length. For example, Event 12 is 8 & under Girls 25-meter Freestyle. A "heat" is one race of the event. For example, in event 12, there could be 5 heats which is 5 groups of 8 & under girls to race the 25-meter freestyle.
