CERTIFIED WORKERS
Certified Workers – Referees, Head Clerk of the Course, Starters, Strokes and Turns Judges, and Head Table Workers all need to receive training in the spring before the season starts. Detailed GRAL certified officials information available here.
Head Clerk of Course is a certified official position responsible for getting swimmers lined up for the correct lane and heat of their event. The Head Clerk of Course will also have 2-3 volunteers to help swimmers move effectively to their lanes so no one is forgotten or overlooked. In order to certify, there is an online training and test to complete as well as shadowing with a certified Head Clerk of Course.
Starters work closely with the Referee to ensure a fair start for each heat of the meet. In order to certify, there is an online training and test to complete as well as shadowing both halves of the meet (can shadow 1st half of one meet; 2nd half of a different meet).
Strokes & Turns Officials observe the stroke formation of the swimmers in their lane(s). If a stroke is not completed in a legal manner according to the rules of the stroke, an infraction is created (a DQ card). In order to certify, there is an in-person training and online test to complete as well as shadowing both halves of the meet (can shadow 1st half of one meet; 2nd half of a different meet) and as well as either 1st or 2nd half of another meet (3 halves to shadow in total).
Head Table Worker assemble timesheets, compare times for each event, reviews DQ cards, sends timesheets to the computer, and prepares ribbons. The Head Table Workers also have a Table Worker Helper to help with these tasks. In order to certify, there is an online training and test to complete as well as shadowing a certified Head Table Worker.
Head Computer Representative enters all official times into the computer one heat at a time. The Head Computer Rep will have a computer helper to read the data as the Head Computer Rep enters the data so the data is entered as quickly and accurately as possible. The Head Computer Rep will be trained and certified to work the computer program for an efficient meet submission.
We are always in need of certified workers. All of these positions need to receive training in the spring before the season starts. All shadowing does count towards a volunteer shift! Please consider becoming certified in one of these positions. Please contact Carol Wakefield at [email protected] for more information.
